The brainchild of D.R Mehta, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), is the world’s largest organisation for the disabled. The institution was started in 1975 with the intention of aiding those with disabilities, without socio-economic constraints. It is the main organisation behind the development of Jaipur Foot, a prosthetic limb hospital located in Jaipur, India.
A prime example of India's frugal innovation, Jaipur Foot's eponymous invention is the cheapest existing prosthetic limb in the world to manufacture, and limbs (including the Jaipur Foot, Jaipur Knee, prosthetic arms, and electric hands) are supplied free of charge to anyone who comes to Jaipur Foot in need. One can have a limb measured, created, and fitted within days, if not hours. Once fitted, patients are also given support whilst re-integrating into society, and many patients go on to work at the practice.
In keeping with D.R Mehta's founding principles, 96% of funding is used on the patients, with only 4% of going towards other expenditures (the lowest percentage of any NGO in the world). With over 1.75 million beneficiaries, it is also the most prolific organisation of its kind.
